Managing Editor & Communications Manager

Your new company
My client is an independent, influential, global trade union and professional organisation, committed to delivering high quality, cost-effective services to members, and welfare support to seafarers, their dependants and other maritime professionals. They support and protect the interests of over 22,000 maritime professionals in the |UK, Switzerland and Holland.

Your new role
Due to the retirement of the Director of Communications, the company is seeking a consummate communications and editorial professional to take the Union that step further. Reporting to the Head of Strategy, you will be responsible for Internal and External communications using both digital and traditional means. You will formulate and deliver policy objectives, manage the performance and development of your direct reports as well as production of the Unions monthly publication. On top of this, you will develop and manage a budget for the communications department, write engaging and compelling speeches for conferences and events and work with other unions to influence government policies that directly affect their members. You will be expected to manage external agency relationships and establish evaluation methods to gauge the effectiveness of all communications. There will be some travel involved.

What you'll need to succeed

* Degree in a relevant subject (eg marketing, communications, social sciences, journalism) or equivalent
* Minimum of 2 years experience of leading a team
* Outstanding communication skills with excellent spoken and written English
* Accomplished project manager possessing excellent networking, interpersonal and relationship building skills
* Well organised and able to work to deadlines
* Comprehensive understanding of what it takes to develop a story, get it to the right audience, translate complex policy issues into content that is easy to understand and share
* Experience across both print and digital media
* Ideally have knowledge of the trade union movement and maritime industry
Good experience of using digital platforms to drive the performance of social media channels

What you'll get in return
A salary of up to £65,000 is on offer for exceptional candidates plus all of the usual benefits to include contributory pension.
