This is an exciting role within a unique organisation. The plans we are making today are set to change the way people live, work and play in the North and communications output is a key element of our activity. Working as part of a team you will deliver planned and reactive communications relating to agenda-shaping topics.

Transport for the North (TfN) is England's first Sub-national Transport Body. We were formed to transform the transport system across the North of England, providing the infrastructure needed to drive economic growth.

We bring together the North's nineteen local transport authorities and business leaders together with Network Rail, Highways England, and HS2 Ltd and working with Central Government. We enable the North to speak with one voice on the transport infrastructure investment needed to drive transformational growth and rebalance the UK economy.

Our role is to add strategic value by ensuring that funding and strategy decisions about transport in the North are informed by local knowledge and requirements. This fits with the devolution agenda and we draw powers down from central government rather than up from local government.

Our vision is of a thriving North of England, where modern transport connections drive economic growth and support an excellent quality of life.

TfN is looking to recruit the following role:

As our Senior Communications Officer you will undertake proactive and reactive communications, media relations and engagement activities implementing and delivering strategies and plans, whilst also taking a lead for TfN's internal communications.

You will be expected to pro-actively contribute to the development and delivery of our Communications Strategy, ensuring our communications and media services meet their core objectives and continue to maintain and enhance the organisation's reputation.

You will also be required to provide out-of-hours weekend on-call cover on a rota basis for which you will receive an additional allowance.

What we're looking for:

Educated to degree level of equivalent in relevant subject; the successful candidate will possess demonstrable experience within media relations, corporate communications, social media, stakeholder engagement, internal communications, events and e-communications.

You will be experienced in developing communications and media campaigns on behalf of complex organisations, alongside producing high quality content across multiple communication channels.

A sound understanding of local government political frameworks and how to operate within them is desirable, albeit, you will be expected to demonstrate a proven track record of building productive working relationships with the media, partner organisations, external agencies and stakeholders within your previous roles.

Provisional Interview Date:  Monday, 1 October 2018

In return, as well as a competitive salary, our other benefits include:

  • 27 days holiday per annum (Pro-Rata for part time employees)
  • Access to the local government pension scheme
  • Access to various salary sacrifice benefits, including Travel Pass purchase scheme.
